Get a paper towel and place some shortening on it, wipe the whole pan from inside and out. Then you can place the pan over 300 degree preheated oven for about 30 minutes, then remove pan. Cast iron is a very functional pan you can use it on the top range, oven or on an open fire. In addition to, this pan is also convenient you can cook steak, bacon, pancakes, and you can use it for baking. Another tip, if you want to identify if your cast iron is very hot, drop a tiny bit of water on the pan. Once the cast iron is properly heated the surface will sizzles and the water disappears too quickly. 

Keep in mind that cast iron needs certain care and maintenance, if you want your pan last longer. Thus, when cleansing the cast iron use a slight soap and warm water. To rub the burned surface you can use brush and gently scrub the surface. Brush is used to release particles that are trapped on the surface. One more way to get rid the stuck particles or a fragment is to soak the pan with a hot water. However don’t let it soak longer because this could develop corrosion. After cleansing it is best to place the cast iron in a dry area.
